An 'incident' involving an "unidentified person" has been reported at a school in Dubai after which it was put under lockdown.

Scores of worried parents have queued up outside the GEMS Wellington School in Al Khail, seeking answers.

It was not immediately clear what the nature of the incident was.

The Dubai Police have been on the campus since morning. They tweeted: "Dubai Police are currently handling a situation involving an unidentified individual at the GEMS Wellington School on Al Khail Road. Our officers on site are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. All students are safe under the provision of school authorities."

A GEMS spokesperson said in a statement to Khaleej Times: "We have been made aware of an incident which happened at one of our schools this morning. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. All students are safe under the provision of school authorities while this matter is investigated further."
