Projects worth millions of dinars are being lined up across the Southern Governorate over the next two years.
The new municipal and infrastructure plans include state-of-the-art central markets, disability-friendly parks, modern fishing wharfs and roadworks.
They are set to be carried out by the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry.
The projects were highlighted yesterday at an extraordinary meeting of the Southern Municipal Council by the ministry’s Works Under-Secretary Ahmed Al Khayat and Municipal Affairs Under-Secretary Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa.
The municipal projects include:
The BD522,000 Hunainiya Valley Natural Water Spring Park to be built over 7,028sqm
The BD483,948 Mohammed Bin Fares Public Park on 10,240sqm of land
The BD110,000 Zayed Town Disability-friendly 11,800sqm walkway
Four multi-sport pitches covering 2,715sqm at a total cost of BD80,000
Modernisation of the Isa Town Traditional Market and installing air conditioners at a cost of BD650,508
Revamping the 1,520sqm East Riffa Central Market at a cost of BD400,000
The new BD100,000 Zallaq Public Park
Beautification close to Bahrain University at BD300,000, and
Beautification on the Arabian Gulf Highway also at BD300,000
“All of the start and end dates will be given to the council concerned and regular on-site field visits will be conducted to show the progress of work,” said Shaikh Mohammed.
“These are projects we have secured a budget for and there are others that we are working on to present to investors, such as the new central market at Khalifa Town.
“There are also plans to beautify the King Hamad Highway from Askar to Durrat Al Bahrain and a new garden in Askar. These projects are currently unbudgeted as issues concerning them are still under study.”
The infrastructure and building projects include:
Development of two blocks in Isa Town at a cost of BD1.2m
Developing new roads in Hunainiya Valley at a cost of BD3.6m
Expansion of roads in Riffa blocks 915 and 916 at BD550,000
Phase one of road expansions to block 917 in East Riffa at a cost of BD733,507
New road developments in Riffa at a cost of BD250,000
Maintenance to inner roads at a cost of BD425,000
A new BD104,300 fish market in Askar
New Zallaq Youth Centre at a cost of BD173,300
A new BD1.5m College of Engineering at the Bahrain University Sakhir campus
Phase one of sewerage networks in Buhair Valley at a cost of BD94,300. Phase two under design with costs estimated at BD300,000. Phase three under study is set to cost BD800,000, and
BD200,000 sewage drainage connections in Hunainiya Valley
“We have sewage and rain drainage works planned this year and the next in the Southern Governorate as part of infrastructure developments that include roads and construction projects,” said Mr Al Khayat.
“All of the projects that we have listed follow public demands, as conveyed to us by the council, and are in line with available budgets.
“We are keen to push ahead with the projects.”
