Abu Dhabi’s ADNOC has sold a cargo of blue ammonia in partnership with Fertiglobe to Japanese firm INPEX, a move it said demonstrated its commitment to low carbon fuel value chains.

The Japanese company will use the blue ammonia in power generational applications, ADNOC said in a statement.

“The sale builds upon recently announced joint efforts to enhance industrial cooperation between the UAE and Japan and support the development of new UAE-Japan blue ammonia supply chains and follows the recent sale of blue ammonia cargos to Japan’s Itochu and Idemtisu,” the statement said.

Fertiglobe, which is a 58:42 partnership between Netherlands-based OCI and ADNOC, will produce the blue ammonia at its Fertil plant in the Ruwais Industrial Complex, Abu Dhabi.

The shipment underscores the favourable economics for blue ammonia as an emerging source of low-carbon energy, ADNOC said, and is a milestone in its planned scaleup of production in Abu Dhabi.

Blue ammonia is a low-carbon method of producing the compound and, besides fertilizer, has uses in power industrial heating, heavy road transport and shipping.

OCI produces natural gas-based fertilisers and industrial chemicals. Hydrogen and its carrier fuels, such as blue ammonia, are expected to play a particularly important role in ongoing industrial decarbonisation efforts in Japan, ADNOC said.
