Iraq intends to benefit from a joint fund with China to build an oil refinery in the Northern autonomous Kurdistan region and a rail network that stretches all the way to the Southern part of the country, an Iraqi news network reported on Tuesday.

The projects are within a massive construction plan to be executed by Chinese companies in line with their oil-for-project agreement signed between OPEC member Iraq and China in Sept 2019, Aliqtisad News said.

"As per the agreement with China, many strategic projects will be undertaken in Iraq in the coming period and Kurdistan will have a share of these projects," it said, quoting Ahmed Al-Saffar, a member of the Iraqi parliament's finance commission.

Saffar said the projects in Kurdistan to be covered by that fund include an oil refinery, a rail linking Zakho city in the autonomous region with the Southern port of Basra, an oil pipeline, schools and hospitals.
