A host of decisions for the governorate of Gafsa came out of a meeting that brought together on Friday evening a government delegation, a delegation from the Tunisian General Labour Union (French: UGTT) and MPs from the region.

The meeting discussed Gafsa Phosphate Company (French: CPG)'s activity resumption and underlined the need to improve the living conditions in the region, set projects in motion immediately and relaunch job-generating programmes. Basic infrastructure development and the promotion of agriculture and health are also at the core of decisions.

UGTT Deputy SG Bouali Mbarki Saturday told TAP 7,000 jobs will be created, including 2,100 hires at the CPG and the environment company once activity is resumed.

Training will also be provided to 1,000 jobless people over two years before they are recruited by the phosphate company.

Likewise, full funding of 200 projects for those who seek to set up on their own and support will be provided, said Mbarki. Irrigated perimeters will be created along with the implementation of private sector projects, such as the cement factory in EL Gtar and another project of the Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT) that is expected to generate 300 jobs.

Protests staged since last January 20 in the mining basin, including in Redayef, Oum Lar?s, M?tlaoui and Mdhilla, following the proclamation of results of the competition for recruiting 700 enforcement officers at the CPG, brought production to a full halt.
