• The third-prize winner, a student at GEMS Millennium School, Sharjah, developed mind-controlled toys for focus-building

Dubai: Two teams of GEMS Education students excelled at the recently concluded The Assembly, the region’s first Smart Lab-Maker Space and Community Learning Initiative based in Dubai.

Students from Our Own English High School, Sharjah – Boys and GEMS Millennium School, Sharjah were declared the first and third prize winners respectively at the second ‘Show & Tech’, which concluded on 9 June 2019 at the In5 Tech space in Dubai Knowledge Park.

The winners were up against students from 20 different education institutions – including teams made up of much older university students – which collectively showcased over 50 projects. The students showcased their projects based on smart technologies.

The first-prize winners from Our Own English High School, Sharjah – Boys presented their project, “ALIVEAN”, a machine learning app for the visually impaired. The project was put together by Mrudul Mamtani in Grade 10 and Vraj Rajpura, Ahsan Nayaz, and Aryan Krishnan in Grade 12.

Earlier in the year, the ALIVEAN team picked up top spot in the seniors category of GEMS Education’s Global Innovation Challenge. The students are due to present their project at the Singularity University Global Summit in California in August 2019.

Michael Gernon, Chief Education Innovation Officer, GEMS Education, said: “GEMS Education sees genius in every child. Our students are at the forefront of research-driven learning and application, rapidly evolving into innovators and entrepreneurs. This is why we believe in the importance of opportunities for them to unlock their potential. Show & Tech is a unique competition that pitched GEMS student inventors with those from universities. Having secured the two of the top three positions, we couldn’t be happier with the outcome.”

The third-prize winner, Grade 11 student Rishabh Java from GEMS Millennium School, Sharjah, built mind-controlled toys to help build concentration levels and cognitive skills. The project, named Broccoli Brains, aims to help children with ADHD and was earlier this year also shortlisted in the Global Innovation Challenge.

All projects were judged by Alberto Araque, VP Internet of Things & Digital Payments, Etisalat Digital; Ashish Panjabi, Chief Operating Officer, Jacky’s Business Solutions; Bruno Gisquet, Marketing Director, Volkswagen Middle East; Matthew Karau, Lecturer Of Engineering Design, New York University Abu Dhabi; and Vijay Jaswal, Chief Technology Officer, Middle East & Turkey, Software AG.

Show & Tech is an annual showcase for DIY enthusiasts – from students to working professionals – to bring their electronics / technology projects to an audience of start-ups, businesspeople and the wider community. The Assembly focuses on IoT, Robotics, App and web development, AI/Machine learning, AR/VR/ 3D Printing, and the use of the latest tech platforms and APIs.
