DOHA, QATAR: Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) welcomed the incoming students at the Class of 2022 convocation ceremony. The first-year class is made up of nearly 100 students studying biological sciences, business administration, computer science and information systems.
Dr. Amal Mohammed Al Malki delivered an inspiring address during the ceremony: “CMU-Q’s interdisciplinary approach to education will offer you many opportunities to reach your full potential. As you embark on this new journey and take advantage of these opportunities, keep in mind that your degree, important as it is, should not be the sum total of your life’s achievements. Look around you to see how you can tackle challenges within a local and global context, and strive to become an active agent within your community.”
Dr. Al-Malki is the founding dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Hamad Bin Khalifa University. She was part of the CMU-Q faculty for more than a decade.
Michael Trick, dean of CMU-Q, welcomed the class to the community and introduced the faculty members who will teach and guide them: “Throughout your academic journey, your professors will challenge you, inspire you, and teach you. Each class you take will be a window into a specialized area of knowledge with your professors as your guides. And remember, one of the most valuable skills you will learn here is how to work as a team and make the most of everyone’s unique talents.”
This year, CMU-Q received a record number of applications from candidates living outside Qatar, resulting in an exceptionally diverse class. Freshman students represent 26 nations, including the first students from Switzerland and Tanzania. About 40% of the Class of 2022 is Qatari.
