Beirut: Today, the Caretaker Minister of Finance, Dr. Ghazi Wazni and the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Ján Kubiš, met to discuss financial and social matters, in addition to the International Support Group for Lebanon conference to be held on Wednesday, sponsored by the French President Emmanuel Macron and the UN Secretary-General António Guterres with the aim to provide emergency aid to Lebanon.

Following the meeting, Ján Kubiš stated:

“First, I am happy to have met with the Caretaker Minister Dr. Ghazi Wazni, and I was very pleased to hear about the work that the Ministry of Finance is carrying out under his direction, especially with regard to the budget. It is essential to provide a realistic budget for 2021 given the thorny economic, financial and social developments in Lebanon. We hope that the budget will focus on the social needs and protection of Lebanese citizens. This process is just the first step, but we do hope that the Lebanese Parliament will approve this in a timely manner, as the country cannot operate without a budget during these difficult times. Dr. Ghazi Wazni and I also discussed further issues, including the forensic audit of the central bank, the issue of liquidity and foreign currency reserves, as well as the country's ability to provide support to its citizens in light of these difficult circumstances. Additionally, we talked about future UN projects in Lebanon, including the conference that will be held tomorrow under the co-chairmanship of the UN Secretary-General and the French President. We will work to assess the current situation in the country and how the international community best can help Lebanon. The first step, of course, is for Lebanon to form a competent government that can implement needed reforms as quickly as possible."
