Bahrain authorities said work on a vital project linked to installation of remote water consumption reading meters is on good track with Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) so far installing over 102,500 smart meters nearly 43 per cent of the total 238,302 devices.

Of these, over 40,000 allows wireless water meter reading through the automatic meter reading (AMR) hi-tech system, replacing the outdated mechanical metres, said the statement from EWA.

The replacement of mechanical metres with hi-tech smart ones has already been completed in the Governorate of Muharraq, it stated.

In the Southern Governorate, 87% of the mechanical meters have already been replace, with plans to complete the project later this year, it added.

EWA plans to finish replacing the water meters with smart ones country-wide by the end of 2020, said CEO Shaikh Nawaf bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa during his visit to the water distribution directorate in Salmabad yesterday (June 23).

He later inspected the progress of work on the new smart meter project.

The EWA chief stressed the importance of the main advantages of the new remote water reading meter, which aims to support automation of the billing process, reduce water losses and enable subscribers to monitor their consumption, slash operational and maintenance costs.

"The life span of this type of meter exceeds the life span of the mechanical meters", said the EWA chief, stressing the importance of the new smart devices in providing accurate consumption reading.-TradeArabia News Service
