Residents and visitors to Dubai now have 400 smart cars to rent from, with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) adding an additional 200 vehicles to its fleet.

The service costs 50 fils a minute and if the car is returned to the starting point of the journey, it costs 40 fils.

The Smart Car Rental service lets users of eKar and U drive apps to rent a car for six hours without any human involvement in the process of receiving and returning the vehicle.

The RTA has provided 45 locations for the service in Dubai and five of them are at Rashidiya, Union, Burjman, Business Bay and Ibn Battuta Metro stations.

Those opting for the smart cars can get their vehicles refuelled for free at Eppco and Adnoc service stations.

They can also park the cars for free at all RTA-regulated plots. Additionally, they get free insurance for their rentals.

To operate the vehicle, the lessee is required to key in the Personal Identification Number in the device fitted to the vehicle. When the need for the vehicle is ending, the user is required to lock it off through the app. The bill will be forwarded to the user online, said Adel Shakeri, director of the RTAs transportation systems.

From the launch of the service in October 2017 up to the end of August this year, users have made 365,662 trips comprising 277,832 renting hours.
