Nakheel Malls, the retail arm of master developer Nakheel, said on Monday that it would partner with France's Total to install rooftop solar power systems at its Ibn Battuta Mall and Dragon Mart properties.

The company said in a press statement the project would generate around 9 GWh of clean energy with an estimated reduction of over 3,500 tonnes of CO2 yearly.

It said Total Solar Distributed Generation Middle East, a subsidiary of Total, would install 12,000 solar photovoltaic panels spread over an area of around 35,000 sqm on the roofs of the two properties.

Work on the project would commence in January and be completed by the fourth quarter of 2021, according to the statement.

Project value wasn't disclosed.

Nakheel Malls' portfolio includes large-scale malls (Ibn Battuta Mall, Dragon Mart, Nakheel Mall and Golden Mile Galleria), dining and entertainment destinations (The Pointe and Club Vista Mare) and a collection of Pavilions located across six Nakheel residential communities, according to past statements.
