Dubai, UAE : A line up of world-leading speakers, thinkers and policymakers from across the creative industry will come together in person and virtually at the World Conference on Creative Economy (WCCE 21) tomorrow, to collaboratively and practically engage with the future of the creative economy.
Hosted by the UAE Ministry of Culture and Youth, under the leadership of Her Excellency H.E. Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, the landmark global creativity conference will be held from 7 – 9 December 2021 at the Dubai Exhibition Centre in the heart of Expo 2020 Dubai.
The conference will focus on six themes that collectively define the future of the global creative economy including: Education Unleashed, Reworking Work, Technology Transformation, Elevating the Media & Communications Landscape, Future Sustainable, and Inclusivity & Diversity. WCCE 2021 brings together different stakeholders from the creative economy to help build on inclusive and human-first foundations.
Through the UAE Ministry of Culture and Youth’s partnership with Indonesia, which hosted the inaugural event in Bali in 2018, Indonesia has passed on the baton to the United Arab Emirates to host WCCE 2021.
Her Excellency Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, the UAE's Minister of Culture and Youth, said: “ It is a source of great pride and responsibility that we continue to march forward in development and promotion of the global creative economy, after our partners in Indonesia hosted the Inagural event in Bali in 2018. The U.A.E. continues to support the work of creative organisations and cultural practices building on the policy aimed at evolving and strengthening of the creative economy, as a pillar of societies overall growth and sustainability. Providing new opportunities for growth, and empowering talent both locally and globally. Hosting WCCE 2021 in the United Arab Emirates outlines and defines the work we have done to define and solidify the role of the U.A.E. as a global leader in driving conversations and outcomes for the creative economy.
As the U.A.E. celebrates its golden jubilee, there could be no better time to host a landmark event of this nature, particularly at a platform such as EXPO 2020 Dubai which in itself is a testament to the contribution of the creative economy at such a global event. Hosting WCCE 2021 at EXPO, only serves to embolden our resolve to generate policies and roadmaps that will re-write the future of the creative economy ."
Following the success of the 2018 edition of the conference which featured a powerful line-up of speakers including Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Emmy Award-winning US filmmaker Lisa Russell, WCCE 2021 will host an array of global talent across the various sectors of the Cultural and Creative Industries. The three-day programme will feature over 60 sessions of powerful keynote speeches, live and virtual panels, individual talks, live performances, exhibitions, and masterclasses.
Notably, in what will become a landmark moment for CCI in the UAE, Her Excellency Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, will launch the UAE’s National CCI Strategy during WCCE 2021. Joined by HE Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri and HE Dr. Ahmad bin Abdullah Humaid Belhoul Al Falasi, the panelists will share their insights on the importance of the creative economy and supporting SMEs.
One influential thought leader, is John Howkins, British author and leading strategist on creativity and innovation, whose session, entitled ‘Wider Perspectives’, will discuss how maximising cross-sector collaboration across the creative economy is the key to unlocking untapped values. Additionally, HH Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum will discuss how greater accessibility into the creative economy can be achieved, locally and regionally.
Within the theme of ‘Inclusivity and Diversity’ a session hosted by Malcolm Gladwell, author of five New York Times bestsellers, geared towards the power of purpose and passion for independent creatives, will offer practical insights around the factors that are fundamental to a meaningful and sustainable career as an independent creative.
The UAE Ministry of Culture and Youth is working closely with The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) to amplify global support and understanding of the trade and development gains of the creative economy ahead of the upcoming World Conference on Creative Economy (WCCE 2021).
Marisa Henderson, Chief of UNCTAD’s creative economy programme, said: “As the trade and development community realises the potential of the creative economy, there is an opportunity to raise the profile of the topic and ensure its place on the global agenda.”
“The concept of creative economy is not only a cultural aspect, but there’s also a huge economic development point of view to be addressed. UNCTAD’s work has elevated the ‘creative economy’ on the world economic and developmental agenda. The programme’s core focus is on trade in creative goods and services that underpin the activity of the creative industries. The leadership of the United Arab Emirates has a wise vision to build a brighter future, making it is the perfect country to host this conference,” Henderson added.
WCCE 2021 will be attended by international audiences along with policymakers, diplomatic partners, Ministers, academicians, and creatives who represent various regions across the globe.
