Dubai, UAE

Makers from the United Arab Emirates and from other countries across the world will join government officials, innovation company representatives, technology enthusiasts and local community people for a three-day celebration of creativity and innovation on 26-28 February 2019 at Za’abeel Halls 2 & 3 for the second edition of Maker Faire Dubai. The event is an initiative of the Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation for Distinguished Academic Performance in celebration of the UAE Innovation Month.

An impressive volume of project submissions mostly by students defines how far Maker Faire Dubai has come to be the centre stage for young inventors and innovators to exhibit their ideas and to attract seed funding to develop their projects which have the potential to change how we will live the future. This year, there are 150 exhibitors chosen by the Selection Committee which is composed of experts from various fields and sectors.

It is interesting to note that young Makers possess the ability to perceive what humanity needs in the future such as food security, improved social life, and safety. Among several interesting projects which will be featured at Maker Faire Dubai is the Smart Food Storage System conceived by Shamsa Sultan Al Attar-Amna Talib Ali. The idea is to achieve a sustainable solution to increase food availability, reduce pressure on natural resources, eliminate hunger, and improve the livelihood of farmers. Smart Food Storage System seeks to answer adequate food supply as the world population continues to increase which is a major concern as more than one-third of produce is wasted during post-harvest operation.

Unfortunate fire incidents not only cause devastating loss of property, but more importantly they pose danger to people’s lives. Fire Fighting Drone project submitted for exhibition by Emirates Aviation University aims to efficiently extinguish fire with the use of drone which can reach tall buildings and operate in open areas. The drone can carry approximately 15kg of fire extinguisher with a flight time of 28 minutes. A camera is attached to the drone for better visuals to locate where the extinguishing foam should be released at 11 bar pressure. This drone is designed to handle resistive force generated by extinguisher launch in flight. Attached to it is an extinguishing ball which can be dropped into the fire that explodes into extinguishing powder as an extra measure of firefighting efficiency.

A prototype of Auditory Aid for the Financially Underprivileged was created by Maryam Al Hammadi from an old and broken hardware. Wearable eyeglasses are designed with a transparent heads-up display system and a tiny microphone that recognizes live speech. Built-in software picks up the audio and translates it to accurate sign language which is shown on the display system. This allows the deaf person to enjoy his social life more without the communication barrier with someone who is not familiar with standard sign language. When developed, this prototype can increase its efficiency by detecting more than one language and will only cost at an estimate of around AED200-300 when mass produced.

Muhammad Musa Asim’s Mobile Surgical Robot aims to help critical patients requiring immediate surgery. With the use of precise robotic arms, shock mount operating table, 3D cameras, and high-speed GSM link to link a lead surgeon and a team of consultants, as may be required, a remote operation can be done and save the life of a patient. A platform for a proof of concept is currently being established to emphasize the benefits of Mobile Surgical Robot.

Endless inspiring ideas from young Makers will be this year’s major highlight at Maker Faire Dubai 2019. It is a perfect venue for the whole family to learn, play, and share, and to meet the young Makers behind these projects. Visitors can also vote onsite for their top five favourite projects using a SmartApp. Selected projects will advance to the final round where top winners can have a chance to a pool prize of AED100,000 and for their projects to come to life with the financial backing of investors.
