Dubai, UAE: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has organised its Annual Strategy Workshop to review its strategic plan. The plan was aligned to the Eight Principles of Governance in Dubai and the 50-Year Charter, which were launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. It was also aligned with the ten commandments of governance detailed by His Highness in his book, ‘My Story… Memories from Fifty Years of Service.’ The workshop also reviewed DEWA’s mission and corporate values in light of its vision that was reformulated recently based on these principles to become ‘A leading sustainable innovative global corporation.’ This will promote Dubai as a global model of a futuristic city that achieves the happiness of its citizens, helps anticipate the future, and innovates and implements technologies; supporting the transition towards a green sustainable economy.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, DEWA’s Executive Vice Presidents and Vice Presidents took part in the workshop.

Al Tayer noted that the foundations of DEWA’s strategy are built on the vision of the wise leadership; the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and Dubai Government's strategic plans. These include the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, Demand Side Management Strategy, Carbon Abatement Strategy, and others that support the transformation towards clean energy; promoting sustainable development, and ensuring the happiness of citizens, residents, and visitors in Dubai and the UAE.

“Earlier this year, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced the Eight Principles of Governance in Dubai, and the 50-Year Charter, which outline the future of Dubai to achieve the happiness and prosperity of citizens. All those in a position of responsibility in the Emirate of Dubai should abide by these principles. As soon as these were announced, we pledged to His Highness to abide by them. DEWA developed a plan to implement the directives of His Highness in article number 7, which is related to energy-self-sufficiency in 10% of citizens’ homes. DEWA is the first government department to implement the 50-Year Charter. We launched a project to install photovoltaic solar panels in tenth of citizens’ homes in Dubai and connect them to the grid. DEWA awarded the projects to six contractors who will start work immediately. The project will be completed before the end of 2019. DEWA will bear all the costs of this project as it helps to achieve the happiness of citizens,” said Al Tayer.

“For us at DEWA, strategic planning is a key component of a comprehensive system of integrated organisational work that puts excellence, innovation, and good governance at the forefront of our strategic priorities. This ensures the integration and sustainability of all our projects and services, while enhancing DEWA’s global competitiveness. We do this according to a vision that is based on creativity and innovation as a well-established approach to achieving common goals and improving overall work system. The periodic revision of DEWA’s strategy ensures that we keep pace with every rapid development and develop long-term proactive plans to keep pace with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and we use disruptive technologies to achieve the vision of the wise leadership to become the government of the future,” added Al Tayer.

“During the past year, we achieved several local and international milestones that we are proud of. The UAE, represented by DEWA, maintained its first global ranking, for the second consecutive year, with scores of 100% in all Getting Electricity indicators in the World Bank’s Doing Business 2019 report. DEWA also maintained its top position in the Happiness Index in the large Dubai Government Entities category for the second consecutive year, with a 95% happiness level according to Smart Dubai’s Happiness Index that monitors happiness levels among the people of Dubai. These results would not have been achieved without adopting creativity, innovation, and anticipation of the future as bases for our work. This enabled us to improve our performance that DEWA’s practices have become benchmarks for utilities around the world,” said Al Tayer.

Al Tayer thanked all the divisions for their ongoing efforts to improve DEWA’s path of excellence and commended the efforts of working teams from all departments for their active participation in preparing and implementing DEWA’s corporate strategies and resulting operational strategies. He encouraged them to continue making achievements to support the vision of the wise leadership, to create a brighter and more prosperous sustainable and happier future, for generations to come.
