BEIJING, June 17 (Reuters) - China's local governments issued 157.9 billion yuan ($22.81 billion) worth of special bonds in May, up from 94.5 billion yuan in the previous month, the finance ministry said on Monday.

Outstanding local government special bonds were at 8.22 trillion yuan by end-May, the Ministry of Finance said on its website.

Overall, local governments issued 304.3 billion yuan of debt last month, while the outstanding value was 19.9 trillion yuan by the end of May.
