The UAE Federal Authority of Identity and Citizenship announced on Thursday that citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries will have to present their passports while they travel between GCC countries.

The authority said mobility between the countries using the citizens' national identity cards will be suspended from Friday as part of precautionary measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

The use of passport is made mandatory to monitor the movement of individuals from the countries affected by the coronavirus.

The authority said that Emirati citizens residing abroad, who left the country using a national ID, and citizens who entered the country before this decision are excluded, adding that the decision is a temporary move in light of the spread of the virus.

Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, suspended visas for visits to Islam's holiest sites for the Umrah pilgrimage, an unprecedented move triggered by coronavirus fears.
