Saudi Arabia and the UAE are among the world’s top 50 countries in research share according to the Nature Index 2020.

The kingdom landed the 29th spot, while the UAE took the 48th position. They’re the only two Arab counties making it to the global ranking.

The UAE advanced one position compared to the previous two years and achieved 10 percent of the overall Arab countries research share in 2019.

The country was also ranked 5th in both Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and western Asia regions, and achieved an 18 percent increase in adjusted research share, as well as  a 39 percent increase in research count.

“By subject, the [UAE] was also among the top 50 achievers in both earth and environmental sciences and chemistry since 2018 and has almost doubled its share in chemistry since then. So, a player to watch in the Middle East in the years ahead,” David Swinbanks, founder of the Nature Index, said.

The top 15 academic institutions in the Arab world include Khalifa University of Science and Technology and United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) from the UAE.

From Saudi Arabia, the list includes King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), King Abdulaziz University (KAU), King Saud University (KSU) and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM).

Worldwide, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Harvard University and the Max Planck Society continue to occupy the top tiers, according to the index.
