Egypt’s Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala El-Said has approved the allocation of EGP 450m for the General Authority for Roads, Bridges and Land Transport (GARBLT) as part of the latter’s budget in fiscal year (FY) 2020/21.

The allocation comes out of the ministry’s keenness to remove obstacles that may negatively affect the workflow of road and bridge projects implemented by the Ministry of Transport.

El-Said stressed the importance of Egypt’s road and bridges projects, noting that they contribute to creating new urban communities and advancing agriculture, industry, tourism and other development.

The minister pointed to Egypt’s enhanced ranking in the field of road and infrastructure quality, according to the International Competitiveness Index. Egypt leapfrogged from 118th in 2014 to 28th in 2019 in terms of road and infrastructure quality.

She pointed out that the transport sector’s output represents an important aspect of the production inputs in many commodity and service sectors, such as the trade and extractive and transformational industries.

El-Said added that from here comes the importance of improving the efficiency of this sector and its productivity. It also has a direct positive effect on the performance of other economic sectors and their competitiveness and access to markets.
