A comprehensive plan for roads projects has been drawn up for the next two years, as efforts to tackle traffic congestion are underway.
This was revealed yesterday by the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry, as it mapped out the different infrastructure projects worth millions of dinars that were carried out across Bahrain last year.
In its annual report, the ministry said the projects included roads, sewage, construction and maintenance works – adding that it was committed to continuing work on a number of ongoing schemes.
“We had several infrastructure projects carried out last year including road, sewage, construction and maintenance works and we are committed to continue doing more to serve the people and the economic movement,” said the ministry in a statement.
“A comprehensive road projects plan has been laid out until 2021 and the entire network across Bahrain is set for revamps through the roads sector in the ministry.
“New designs include futuristic approaches to possible expansions while addressing the congestion and safety issues besides easing investment opportunities through transportation.”
The report showcased special road projects including Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Sobah Highway at a cost of BD49 million each for two phases, with the second stage expected to be completed in May.
Work at Khalifa Bin Salman Highway which is being conducted at a cost of BD20.1m is also expected to be completed by the end of this year, while work on the entrance to Bahrain International Airport (BD6.4m) is underway.
The rehabilitation phase of the fourth Muharraq bridge costing BD6.9m and paving the way for the new bridge at a cost of BD30.9m are expected to be completed in July.
The report also lists finished revamps to the road network including Sitra Avenue at a cost of BD701,489, Saar Avenue costing BD2.9m, in Isa Town at BD2.4m, and in Adliya at a cost of BD220,965.
It also includes work on inner roads in Zallaq costing BD1.3m, in Sanabis costing BD2.6m, and in Abu Maher costing BD1.3m.
New roads were also paved in Shahrakan at a cost of BD149,969 along with new lanes on Burgerland roundabout at a cost of BD780,960.
Development to Al Estiqlal Highway intersection with Al Mahzora Avenue was done at a cost of BD780,960, and at roads in Isa Town (BD765,000), Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Sobah Highway with Al Fateh Highway (BD71,000), expansion to Khalifa Bin Salman Highway and Wali Al Ahd Highway (BD76,000), Khalifa Bin Salman Highway to the Bahrain Flour Mills Company (BD108,917) and Khalifa Bin Salman Highway to the Naval Support Activity Bahrain (BD498,000).
Other road works included expanding Isa Bin Salman Highway (BD689,457) and Al Mahzora Avenue to Al Estiqlal Highway (BD486,000).
The annual report stated that the country’s sewage networks have also undergone various development and expansion works.
Work
This includes work at King Faisal Highway at a cost of BD319,950, the Seef District and Reef Island (BD159,417), installing water tanks in Hamad Town (BD159,417 and BD157,317), installing new internal water dispensing pumps at a cost of BD1m, replacing existing pipes in Arad (BD2m), and expanding the South Alba Sewage Water Plant (BD5.4m).
“The sewage sector dealt with 12,830 general complaints last year and 401 complaints about water pump malfunctions, while conducting maintenance and regular work,” said the report.
“We have cleaned 56,427 rainwater drainage holes, produced 95,000 cubic metres of treated water daily and treated 27,000 cubic metres of sewage daily, and have treated 85,000 cubic metres of waste water daily at the Tubli Wastewater Treatment Plant.”
Amongst the 37 sewage projects completed last year at a total cost of BD24.4m, enhancing operations at existing sewage stations cost the ministry BD4.8m, installing a new system at the Tubli Wastewater Treatment Plant cost BD3m, and cleaning water channels cost BD2.6m.
The ministry said in its report that it also carried out work on behalf of other government ministries and organisations.
They include building a hall at a primary girls school in Riffa at a cost of BD926,155 and an academic building for a primary girls school in Muharraq at a cost of BD849,983.
Maintenance work was also carried out at the National Action Charter Monument at a cost of BD251,322, the Bahrain Medical Society (BD64,000) and the UN House (BD156,000).
