BEIRUT: Rescuers said an earthquake early on Monday has left dozens dead and hundreds wounded in opposition-held parts of Syria, already battered by nearly 12 years of war.

The White Helmets said the earthquake has "resulted in hundreds of injuries, dozens of deaths, and people being stranded in the winter cold".

State media reported that more than 230 people had been killed, a toll that is thought to include only those living in government-held areas. (Reporting by Maya Gebeily; editing by Jason Neely)
