Muscat – In efforts to raise environmental awareness among members of the community, Environment Authority, in cooperation with ‘Ambassadors of the Environment Industry Team’, launched an initiative in North Batinah on Wednesday.
According to Nizar bin Salim al Araimi, Director of Environment Department in North Batinah, the initiative – called Environmental Ambassadors – aims to prepare qualified cadres for environmental work, and provide students with opportunities to participate in environmental work in the field.
“It will promote environmentally responsible behaviour in all segments of society,” Araimi said.
He stressed that the Environment Authority seeks to empower young people to assume social responsibility to live in a sustainable manner and enhance their environmental leadership capabilities.
Eman Ali al Hosni, head of the team, informed that Environmental Ambassadors is a one-year initiative targeting academic and government institutions, in addition to a number of private sector companies.
She listed the creation of qualified individuals to be the constant link between the environment and their institutions and societies as the aim of the initiative.
“They will be well prepared, trained in programmes and activities related to the environment, and informed about environmental issues and the risks of pollution. They will also be involved in conducting environmental programmes and campaigns, leading and managing voluntary environmental activities among community members.”
Participants will be encouraged and supported to acquire academic qualification in environmental studies, attend workshops and e-learning sessions on various environmental issues, and empowered to spread awareness among community members.
“Twenty-seven ambassadors will be prepared in its first phase of the initiative. They will participate in a two-day intensive academic training programme. Participants will also visit sites that were affected by climatic conditions,” Eman added.
