Abu Dhabi Waste Management Centre (Tadweer) announced on Monday that it recycled 80 percent of Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste collected in the Abu Dhabi emirate in 2020.
The state-owned waste management company said in a press statement that it recycled 1,915,724 tonnes out of the 2,400,000 tonnes of C&D waste collected in the Abu Dhabi emirate last year.
C&D waste accounted for 32 percent of the total waste handled by Tadweer.
The statement noted that recycled C&D waste has been used in the construction of roads and for vital infrastructure projects including Etihad Rail, Khalifa Port, Abu Dhabi Airports, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Louvre Museum, Saadiyat Island, Ghweifat International Highway, and ADNOC’s oil fields, among others.
The Abu Dhabi Executive Council has mandated that road and construction projects across the emirate’s three regions should incorporate 40 percent of recycled materials.
Abdulmohsin Alkatheeri, Acting Director of Projects and Facilities Department at Tadweer, said: "In line with Tadweer’s strategic goal of promoting integrated waste management, the Centre has stepped up efforts to achieve the optimal utilisation of waste. Such efforts help us ensure the preservation of natural resources and keep Abu Dhabi’s environment clean, safe and sustainable."
According to the statement, between 2016-2020, Tadweer produced 11 million tonnes of recycled aggravate from C&D waste, equivalent of 4,200 km linear street, which is similar to the construction of three streets stretching along the UAE’s coast. In this same period, the Centre’s facilities handled an average of 212,000 tonnes per month of demolition and construction waste, with a maximum of 334,629 tonnes per month, and a minimum of 147,887 tonnes per month.
