RCSI-Bahrain medical students wear their white coats for the first time as they enter the clinical teaching phase of their degree in a traditional 'White Coat Ceremony'

Manama, Bahrain: The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland - Medical University of Bahrain (RSCI-Bahrain), a leading world-class medical university headquartered in Ireland, held its 3rd annual White Coat Ceremony for RCSI Bahrain medical students in Busaiteen yesterday. This years ceremony was followed by an address by Dr. Ahmad Jamal, President of the Bahrain Medical Society, who is a surgeon and fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in Dublin. Fellow students, parents and distinguished guests attended the ceremony.

The White Coat ceremony, an age old RCSI tradition wherein medical students entering the intermediate study cycle (3rd year of medical school) wear their white coats for the first time, marks the students transition to the intensive clinical part of their course.

Professor Kevin O'Malley, President RCSI Bahrain stated "The white coat represents the student entry into a new and special realm. It is not a sign that they arrived but they begin the journey, which will continue for the rest of their life. It is a sign that students should subordinate their own interests to the interests of their patients and to adhere to the highest ethical and moral standards during their practice."

"The declaration made by the students reminds them of the privileges and the responsibilities attached to being a clinical student. These include the privilege to work with patients, the imperative for ethical behaviour, the primacy of the patients interest above all considerations, confidentiality, compassion, professionalism and life long learning," Professor O'Malley continued.

This year's students taking part in the White Coat ceremony will be the graduating class of 2012. They were presented with University pins to mark their transition.
