Doha: Weill Cornell Medicine – Qatar (WCM-Q) has recognized the academic achievements of 57 of its students by inducting them on to the Dean’s Honor List.
The students have all achieved a grade point average of at least 3.75 for the 2019-2020 academic year, a difficult goal during the best of times but even more so with the additional challenge of the coronavirus pandemic and working from home.
At an online ceremony hosted by Dr. Sean Holroyd, acting assistant dean for student affairs at WCM-Q, and watched by family friends, faculty and staff members, the students were honored for their hard work and commitment to their studies.
Dr. Javaid Sheikh, dean of WCM-Q, said making the honor list at this time was an impressive feat.
He said: “I’m thankful that modern technology allows me to speak with you all so we can share this moment of pride and celebration. Given the current situation with the pandemic, you particularly deserve this accolade.
“Throughout the unprecedented challenges of the past year, you have remained calm and resolute in your pursuit of academic excellence. Indeed, your strength and resilience have been impressive to all of us at the college.
“You have demonstrated a dedication and commitment that is admirable and will be of huge benefit to you in your careers as physicians.”
The students, seven of whom are in the foundation class, 23 in pre-med 1, and 27 in pre-med 2, were also congratulated by WCM-Q alumnus and keynote speaker Dr. Nigel Pereira, assistant professor of reproductive medicine and obstetrics and gynecology at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York.
Dr. Pereira said it was an honor to be speaking before the students and celebrating with them, and said that during this time, he is especially thankful and grateful for the normal aspects of life which are often taken for granted.
He concluded by praising the work of WCM-Q’s faculty and staff in helping to graduate exceptional doctors.
He said: “I am what I am today thanks to the medical education at WCM-Q.”
