As a part of an ongoing energy and water conservation programme, TECOM Investments, a member of Dubai Holding and the first company in the UAE to adopt a Sustainable Procurement Policy" started implementing water efficient initiatives and designs to reduce the overall need for water, conserve its resources and save money. The reduction of water use would also reduce the equivalent effluent into the treatment plants and requiring less treatment cost, furthermore, systems are less strained as they run on lower capacities and may last longer or require less capital costs.
In line with the water conservation programme and initiatives, the Sustainable Energy & Environment Division (SEED) of TECOM Investments, a member of Dubai Holding worked closely with Renewed Lighting Solutions, the U.A.E. and GCC exclusive distributors of Waterless No Flush ™ Urinals on its water conservation to eliminate the use of water for its urinals.
Ali Bin Towaih said: "This initiative comes as a part of our conservation programme that was launched last year with the aim of reducing water consumption by 30 per cent. Sustainable development promotes the use of resources to meet our needs without depriving those of the future generations."
"We are very proud of the results generated by our water conservation programme, and we are confident of reaping higher dividends in our drive to achieve sustainable objectives as outlined in the Dubai Strategic Plan 2015."
Via a retrofit pilot project, Renewed Lighting Solutions Joe the Plumber successfully retrofitted 2 existing flushed urinals with the Kalahari™ (model), Waterless No Flush ™ Urinals at TECOM Investment's management toilets at Dubai Internet City.
"Waterless No Flush ™ Urinals is the perfect answer to restroom maintenance problems, vandalism and high traffic water / sewer use, with a fixture that works completely without water or flush valves and due to the dryness of the fixture, bacterial growth is inhibited and odors eliminated through the minimal use of the BlueSeal®. A patented vertical EcoTrap® being the simple solution to saving up to 45,000 gallons of water and sewer usage per urinal per year" states Mohammed Al Quraishi, Owner / CEO of Renewed Lighting Solutions.
The Waterless No-Flush™ Urinals resemble conventional fixtures, and easily replace them. They install to the regular waste lines, but eliminate the flush water supply lines. Flush valves are eliminated as well; there are no handles to touch, no sensors and no moving parts! The urinal bowl surfaces are urine repellent; urine is 99% liquid and its drainage is affected without flush water.
The conventional water-filled urinal's trap drain is replaced by a disposable EcoTrap® inserted in the urinal outlet. It holds a layer of the immiscible BlueSeal® liquid floating on top of a urine layer. This combination trap seal blocks out sewer gases, and the covering BlueSeal® layer blocks out urine odors from the room.
The patented EcoTrap® principle relies on the proven and simple vertical trap principle. The patented vertical EcoTrap® design provides superior efficiencies to other, more complicated trap arrangements.
The BlueSeal® is a long lasting and biodegradable trap seal liquid. Having a specific gravity lower than water or urine it therefore remains for an extended period of time in the trap with urinal use (small amount do get carried out with each urinal use), and it also remains indefinitely in the trap with no use, sealing trap odors. The BlueSeal® has zero evaporation at 100 degrees and does not freeze above -70 degrees Fahrenheit.
"I am absolutely thrilled with this retrofit pilot project, we believe this to be a solid decision to move water conservation ahead in Dubai, as Dubai grows and faces daunting long term water issues. Our product line can become an integral part and brand name to Dubai's future," states Mr. Klaus Reichardt, Founder and Managing Partner for Waterless Company.
With our preliminary case study on this pilot project, TECOM Investments will be looking at a 53.25% saving with Waterless No Flush ™ Urinals, on 1 (one) use of a flush urinal, the basic water cost would be AED 0.03 fils per flush gallon (portable water), in comparison with using the Waterless No Flush ™ Urinal the cost would be AED 0.014 fils per use. These figures are based on DEWA slab tariff and the cost of the BlueSeal® use and the EcoTrap®.
Mohammed Al Quraishi adds "Water is one of our most critical resources and it is under threat. Effective Water Efficiency planning seeks to "do more with less" without sacrificing comfort or performance. Saving water, it's something we all can practice. Without much inconvenience, practicing water conservation can help save thousands of gallons per month."
Renewed Lighting Solutions Joe the Plumber adds "A new line of Waterless No-Flush™ Urinal systems that are made of approximately 30 percent soybean resin, this means Waterless No-Flush™ Urinals not only save water but help save natural resources and promote sustainability as well. The soybean urinals look and perform just as conventional Waterless products using the same EcoTrap™ system that has proven to be the most cost-effective trap system available for no-water urinals and they are engineered and manufactured in the United States".
Because water is one of the world's most vital natural resources, all building projects especially green projects should include water efficiency as a goal. Waterless urinals are becoming increasingly popular as the green building movement takes hold with certification programs such as U.S. Green Building Council, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).
With Waterless No-Flush™ Urinals, LEED - Water Efficiency (WE) Credit opportunities are achievable earning up to 3 LEED credit points.
WE Credit 2.0: Innovative Waste Water Technologies - 1 point
WE Credit 3.1: Water Use Reduction: 20% Reduction - 1 point
WE Credit 3.2: Water Use Reduction: 30% Reduction - 1 point

AboutTECOM Investments
A subsidiary of Dubai Holding, TECOM Investments started with the aim of developing the knowledge-based economy in Dubai. This aim addresses a variety of industry sectors including telecom, media and technology park development. To achieve the ambition of developing the knowledge economy, TECOM successfully initiated a cluster approach in order to tackle each defined component of the knowledge-centric service offering. The clustered approach proved successful not just in the information and communication technology industry but also in media, education, and biotechnology sectors. TECOM first launched its telecom operations in 2000 with what was the region's first commercial deployment of converged services over a single IP network, offering a range of corporate and residential services, including IP triple play (TV, telephony and broadband internet). TECOM recently announced the acquisition of a 35% stake in Tunisie Telecom. TECOM's other telecom investments include a Axiom, the largest mobile distributor in the Middle East, and Interoute, a next generation IP network connecting together most countries in Europe.
