The 4th year of DIFF wraps up
The 4th Dubai International Film Festival, the most celebrated cultural event in the UAE, wound up on the evening of Sunday 16th December at a closing party organized in the middle of the desert. Celebrating in true Arab fashion, amongst the starlight, sprawling sand dunes and ethnic dances being performed, Volvo Cars, the official transport sponsor of the event transported guests into the midst of the Desert for the much talked about event.
"The closing night was a true cultural experience for me, the perfect way to end this magical trip. We were dancing in the middle of the desert to Arab Folk songs till the wee hours of the night, I had a glorious time' commented a German Director on his first visit to the UAE.
The Indian Cinema night on Wednesday 12th December, was a spectacular success. Well reputed Indian stars including Oscar nominated Director Mira Nair, the graceful Shahbana Azmi and Akbar Khan were present at the occasion. Mira Nair was supporting her new project 'Aids Jaago', the campaign seeks to heighten knowledge about HIV/AIDS and owes much of its success to 'star power'. Nair explained the use of recognizable stars: "Cinema is almost one of our temples. Our actors and actresses have always been in a way like gods and goddesses. That is why I wanted to use these actors to convey the message, because this is what would speak to the people. "The distinguished Kabir Bedi, also present at the festival to promote his film 'Taj Mahal' by Director Akbar Khan, pulled on to the red carpet in a Volvo car, escorting the glamorous London based Parveen Dusanj
'Whatever Lola wants', the much awaited film by Moroccan filmmaker Nabil Ayouch, launched at DIFF on the Arbian Gala night which took place on 13th December. He commented that the film both stressed the differences between the East and West and aimed for understanding between civilizations: "The idea of the clash of civilizations is not right. We need to understand each other" explained Nabil. Laura Ramsey, the American actress(She's the Man, 2005) playing the main character Lola, took this a step further by mingling with Arab guests after the screening including Roula Beiruty, Marketing Manager Volvo Cars Middle East.
