According to independent testing firm, Trend Micro scored high in all categories: signature and proactive detections, response times and rootkit detection.

Dubai, UAE - Trend Micro Incorporated (TSE: 4704), a global leader in Internet content security, announced today that its consumer product, Trend Micro Internet Security 2008, top scored in a comparison testing of 28 other antivirus products conducted by a leading, independent testing organization.

AV-Test.org (www.av-test.org), an independent testing group at the Otto-von-Guericke-University of Magdeburg, Germany, reported that Trend Micro Internet Security was 1 of only 4 other products that detected all 12 active rootkits in the test, surpassing products of other major competitors. A rootkit is a type of malicious software that takes control of a computer system and is difficult to detect because it is often activated before a system boots up. Trend Micro was given the highest rating of "Very Good" in this testing category.

Trend Micro's product also achieved the highest possible rating of "Very Good," exceeding products of many major competitors, in its signature-based, on-demand detection capabilities. According to AV-Test.org, products were tested against more than 1 million samples of Trojan horses, backdoors, bots, worms and viruses found spreading or which were distributed in the last six months.

The test results for other categories were:

  • In false positives/negatives:  "Good."  (Trend Micro's product had only one false positive during a scan of 65,000 known clean files.)

  • In proactive detection:  "Good."  (Based on 3,500 samples for the retrospective test as well as 20 active samples for the test of the "Dynamic Detection" - and blocking - of malware.)

  • In response times to new widespread malware:  "Good."  (Trend Micro's product took 2-4 hours to respond to malware outbreaks based on 55 different samples from the entire year 2007. Other major vendors' products took between 4 to over 8 hours.)

According to research by TrendLabsSM, Trend Micro's global network of research, service and support centers, Web threats grew by over 1500 percent between 2005 and 2007.  The AV-Test team also discovered more than 5.5 million new malware samples in 2007.  For consumers, this means that the simple act of browsing the Internet from their desktop or mobile device can wreak havoc on their home computers and networks.  So while pattern-based detection is important, it is critical for both computers and mobile devices to be blocked from accessing Web sites that may contain malicious code before malware has a chance to enter the desktop or network.  Trend Micro provides coordinated security in every area where Web threats can be most effectively stopped:  in the cloud, at the gateway and on the endpoint.

With Trend Micro Internet Security 2008, consumers get proactive, seamless protection from threats that compromise their personal digital identity and the private, important files and images stored on their computers. The product features: antivirus security, anti-spyware protection, personal firewall, fraud defense, wireless network monitoring, home network control, and advanced parental control.
