Abu Dhabi - Thuraya Satellite Telecommunication Company's Software Development Services department has received the CMMI Level-3 quality certification from the U.S.-based Software Engineering Institute.

CMMI, or Capability Maturity Model Integration, is a process that helps improve quality. The certification was awarded to Thuraya in December by SEI, part of Carnegie Mellon University.

"CMMI will not only improve our products, it will also help us manage our risks, improve our decision-making and significantly increase our returns on investment," said Chief Technology Officer Ali Al Mazrooei.

Only a few companies in the Gulf have received this certification.

"In the near future, we are aiming to implement CMMI levels 4 and 5 to demonstrate our capabilities to quantitatively manage our products and services in order to produce high quality and predictable results," Mr. Al Mazrooei added.

CEO Yousuf Al Sayed visited the Primary Gateway in Sharjah to personally congratulate the 16-member CMMI team.

"This is a great achievement for Thuraya and yet another sign of our commitment to bringing our business practices at par with the best in the world," Mr. Al Sayed said after witnessing the final session in the year-long appraisal process.

The appraisal was conducted by CyberQ Consulting Pvt. Ltd., an Indian company on behalf of SEI.

According to SEI, CMMI is being adopted by companies worldwide to improve their performance in software development.

The CMMI achievement came a year after Thuraya received the ISO 9001:2000 certification. That appraisal covered nine departments.
