Three-week curriculum in Atlanta includes seminars, workshops and one-on-one training sessions, with a focus on ethics, technology and safety
Three Arab journalists recently participated in the inaugural CNN Journalism Fellowship program at the CNN Headquarters in Atlanta. This is a multi-faceted training course that brought a group of affiliated broadcasters from around the world to the network's global headquarters in Atlanta.
The first participants from the Middle East came from CNN partner affiliates in Kuwait and Lebanon. They included Ahmad Taha, Head of English News Anchors for Kuwait TV, Joseph Khawly, Field Reporter for the Lebanese Broadcasting Authority, and Sarah Khoury, Head of English News at Future Television in Beirut.
The journalists participated in a three-week fellowship which provided seminars, hands-on workshops, one-on-one technical trainings, personalised curricula, and meetings with CNN International executives, producers, anchors, writers and editors, with a particular emphasis on teaching safety, technology in the field and journalist ethics.
"CNN International is not only a globally respected and trusted news source but also one of the largest newsgathering operations in the world. Because of this, we have a tremendous wealth of information and experience that we can share with partner broadcasters around the world," said Ron Ciccone Senior Vice President and Managing Director for Turner Broadcasting in the Middle East.
"However, one of the best aspects of this program is that it provides an unmatched forum for dialogue and learning, not only between CNN International and the fellows, but also among the fellows themselves," Ron Ciccone added.
The training course offered to CNN International's affiliates focuses on sharing with the participants the way CNN prepares for the demands and challenges of today's ever-changing world of broadcast journalism. Several times a year the CNN Journalism Fellowship program will bring groups of journalism professionals to the Atlanta headquarters for the training.
Although the Fellowship is new, it builds on the 18-year success of the International Professionals Program (IPP), which was launched in 1989 by Ted Turner. Turner demonstrated his support for the new program by meeting with this inaugural group of participants.
While in operation, the IPP brought more than 600 journalists from 123 countries and 207 news organisations to CNN headquarters for three-week trainings, meetings and cultural exchange. It' successor, the CNN Journalism Fellowship program, remains the only course of its kind in the world.
