10 June 2007
On 9th June, 2007 around 200 cardiologists and other physicians will watch the Live Demonstration Course in Basic and Advanced Interventional Cardiology at Hotel Grand Hyatt, for the first time in ever in Dubai from a private hospital. The cardiologists attending the meeting will not only be from the UAE but also from the neighboring countries, as well as from Europe and the United States. They will also experience 'Hands-on Workshop', conceived and conducted by the upcoming Shawl Cardiovascular Institute and Research Centre (SCIRC) at Zulekha Hospital, Dubai.

This programme is a prestigious part of Synapse, the Branded CME programme of Zulekha Hospital, is granted 13 credit hours by the Dept of Health and Medical Sciences, Dubai and will be in the sovereignty of Dr. Fayaz Shawl, who is also entrusted as the Chairman and Chief Interventional Cardiologist of upcoming SCIRC at Zulekha Hospital, Dubai. The Live Demonstration features Dr. Shawl with his world renowned faculty demonstrating interesting Interventional cardiology cases. Dr. Shawl has been conducting live demonstration courses since 1985 after his teacher, Dr. Andreas Gruentzig passed away in a tragic air accident. In fact, it was Andreas Gruentzig who started teaching interventional cardiologist ever since he performed his 1st coronary angioplasty in a man in Zurich in September 16th, 1977. Dr.  Shawl is a member of his prestigious Gruentzig society and is lecturing on the upcoming 30th anniversary of coronary angioplasty in Zurich on September 16th, 2007.

Dr. Fayaz Shawl, M.D. is Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Medicine at George Washington University, USA and Director of Interventional Cardiology at Washington Adventist Hospital, Maryland. In the early days of Angioplasty, Dr. Shawl brought the U.S. military into the balloon age when he performed the first PTCA at a military hospital (Walter Reed,). One of the pioneers of interventional cardiology, Dr. Shawl trained under Andreas Gruentzig and Richard Myler. During his practicing days conducting high risk cases, he has developed his own, indigenous method of Interventional procedure, which later has come to be known as the 'Shawl Technique'. He has been sharing his expertise and in-depth experience in Interventional procedures through Live Demonstration courses since 1988.Having performed over 18,000 interventional procedures, Dr. Shawl is probably credited to have performed more interventional procedures than anyone else in the world.

Dr. Fayaz Shawl, the Chairman of upcoming SCIRC, at Zulekha Hospital, Dubai, believes that 'live-procedure-view' teaching is the most effective. He strongly believes that doctors who come to attend the course want to watch every detail: the good, the bad and the ugly. In fact Live Demonstration means to demonstrate the entire procedure. It becomes very important to show how to make necessary wire tips, select appropriate balloons, how to park and most important how to avoid complications. The demonstration will also throw light on how to select and deploy a stent and how to easily perform Rota-ablation without running into problems.

This programme will also demonstrate for the first time not only in the UAE, but the entire Middle East, the use of Impella left heart assist device. This device is inserted without surgery through the groin artery while the patient is awake and talking, even if his heart stops functioning. Dr. Shawl will be performing this procedure on one or two patients on June 9th, who are poor candidates for open heart surgery, and will not tolerate a routine angioplasty. With the use of this artificial left heart assist device, the angioplasty can be carried out in a safe manner. Dr. Shawl will also demonstrate in this live course the use of stent technology for opening blocked arteries to the brain, thus preventing stroke. A patient from Pakistan is being referred to Dr. Shawl for this procedure as he would not tolerate conventional surgery (carotid endarectomy) because of his multiple medical problems. Dr. Shawl has performed over 850 such procedures in the United States with a complication rate of under 0.5% in the last 400 patients.  For further information on this procedures as well as other procedures, log onto www.FayazShawl.com

This Live Demonstration brings a unique platform for participants to interact with a world renowned faculty later in a relaxed interactive setting. This programme differs from other CME programmes, where it offers comprehensive 'cases of year' in review of the field presented with 'Hands on work shop' on the very next day of the procedure. This enables the attending doctors to ask all the queries that would be fresh in their mind from watching the Live Demonstration on the earlier day.

Through Live Demonstrations, Didactic Lectures and Case Discussions, this programme from Zulekha Hospital will provide a learning environment for basic and advanced technical skills while discussing the selection process in variety of complex cases.
