Engineering university welcomes representatives from academia, industry for two-day course.

DOHA, Qatar -- Texas A&M University at Qatar hosted a continuing education course titled "Process Safety Management Systems." The course, conducted by Dr. Luc Vechot, assistant professor of chemical engineering, and Dr. Simon Waldram, managing director of Waldram Consultants Ltd., was specially designed for those beginning a career in process safety management. It examined the key principles and components of process safety management systems and how performance in these areas varies between countries, industries and companies.

Course attendees from Qatar Petroleum, QatarGas, Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO), RasGas, Qatar Vinyl Company, Qatar Chemical Company (QChem) and Velosi also visited the process safety laboratory at the University. Key equipment for chemical reaction hazards research was presented, and attendees witnessed a demonstration of dust explosibility at laboratory scale.

Vechot said, "The course offered an overview of key principles and elements in good and effective Process Safety Management Systems. Particular attention was given to common process hazards and accident investigations."

He added, "The course gave us a wonderful opportunity to exchange views and experiences with our colleagues from the industry, and it was only the first in a series of courses on safety. We hope that the following courses will meet the same success and contribute to enhancing and pushing forward the understanding of Process Safety in Qatar."

Waldram commented on the course, saying, "Our delegates came from a variety of backgrounds and companies, and it was good to be able to interact with them throughout the training. Many of those who were experienced in process safety management were able to make very positive contributions during discussions. I hope that the program of continuing education courses offered by Texas A&M at Qatar will develop so as to become a key training opportunity for those working in industry in Qatar. I welcomed being given the opportunity to share in the development and presentation of this of this course."
