Dubai-UAE: 21 April, 2015

For many people, a running nose is a constant part of their daily life. It affects every aspect of their life and in a desert land like the UAE even walking on the street can immediately trigger the runny nose, headaches and facial pain.

According to WrongDiagnosis.com, a prominent provider of medical health information, 300,000 people in the UAE suffers from chronic sinusitis. The condition results in constant irritation and swelling of the nasal passages and when it persists for more than three months the condition becomes chronic. In the short run the illness causes discomfort and hampers the standard of living and in the long run leads to far reaching consequences as it can cause pus formation in the sinuses, ear infections and vision problems. Complications can also arise when the infection, due to the close proximity to the brain, results in meningitis and brain abscess

Dr. Madhusudan Shendre, ENT Surgeon at VPS' Healthcare Group's newest Hospital Medeor 24 x 7, said, "Everyone experiences headaches, runny noses and even ear infection at least once a year. However for chronic sinusitis sufferers this is part of their daily lives. Sinuses are air pockets in the cheekbones, low center of the forehead, between the eyes, at the nasal bridge and in bones behind the nasal cavity. During a viral or bacterial infection, the walls of the sinuses become inflamed. Once the membrane is inflamed it blocks the drainage of fluid from the sinuses into the nose and throat. When this fluid builds up inside the sinuses it causes intense pressure and pain. And in chronic sinusitis the inflammation persists leading to the formation of grape like structures called polyps."

Chronic sinusitis is usually a result of allergies, frequent infection , smoking and other environmental pollutants. It leads to blockage in the sinuses by thick pus, polyps and abnormal bonny structure. Nasal endoscopic examination and computerized tomography scan of Paranasal Sinuses (CT scan PNS) would help us in diagnosing chronic sinusitis and assessing condition of sinuses before surgery.  Medicines are prescribed to control the symptoms.

"Developments in technology have given us increased accessibility in surgical field, perfection and success .High quality cameras, endoscopes and specifically designed instruments used via nose to remove disease blocking sinuses to increase the ventilation of paranasal sinuses.  Endoscopic Sinus Surgery has evolved as modality of treatment of choice in Chronic Sinusitis," Dr Madhusudan continued.

Recovery time is usually four to six weeks following which the standard of life considerably improves the quality of life for the sufferer.
