Company wins major infrastructure projects in GCC; Overall order income exceeds 1 billion Dirhams

DUBAI: Siemens Logistics & Assembly Systems Group, through its subsidiary SD (Middle East) LLC, a leading regional player in material handling automation, postal automation and electronics assembly systems, announced that it had witnessed unprecedented growth in fiscal year 2004, winning orders totally valued at AED 1.46 billion in the Middle East alone.

With the acquisition of several important airport automation projects in the Middle East in fiscal year 2004, Siemens Logistics and Assembly Systems, through its subsidiary SD (Middle East) LLC, has consolidated its market position in the region's automation and infrastructure industry and has been awarded prestigious projects including airports in UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi) and currently works on tenders for Sharjah, Egypt (Cairo & Sharm El Sheikh) and Qatar (Doha). The company is strongly supported by Mr. Salem Al Moosa, Chairman of the Board of SD (Middle East). Al Moosa Group Investment is the local partner of Siemens AG.

Formerly known as Siemens Dematic, Siemens Logistics & Assembly Systems through its subsidiary SD (Middle East) LLC was recently awarded the installation of an automated baggage handling system at Terminal 3, Concourse 2 & 3 as well as a car park check-in area at Dubai International Airport. Another important project the company won was the construction of the Cargo Mega Terminal (CMT), which will be located within the Cargo Village of Dubai and will serve Emirates Sky Cargo.

Explaining that the company's success in airport logistics and engineering underlined a new era in Siemens' long association with the region's growth, Guenter Behrend, General Manager, Siemens Logistics & Assembly Systems through its subsidiary SD (Middle East) LLC, said: "With our keen understanding of regional trends, we have been able to build important relationships with government and business entities in the GCC. With more promising tenders in the pipeline, we are hoping that Siemens Logistics & Assembly Systems will continue to chart spectacular growth in the current year."

During 2004, the company also won other important projects including:

Abu Dhabi - Supply and installation of Baggage Handling System for Amiri Flight

Dubai - Various upgrades of the Baggage Handling System with high-speed tray conveyor system at Dubai Airport's Terminal 1

This week, Siemens Logistics & Assembly Systems through its subsidiary SD (Middle East) LLC added another feather to its cap when it was awarded the ISO 9001:2000 certificate by the British Standards Institution (BSI) for design, installation and commissioning of material handling systems. The German headquarters of the company has long carried the ISO certificate. Therefore, achieving the ISO 9001:2000 certification extends the scope to cover the Middle East region also.

Tom Johnston, BSI Middle East Manager, presented the ISO 9001:2000 registration certificate to Al Moosa Group Chairman Mr. Salem Al Moosa. "The commitment of the entire group was evident in achieving the design, development and implementation of the system in such a short period of time," Johnston said. "The organization can be rightly proud of its efforts and BSI is pleased to be associated with such a professional organization which displayed a clear commitment to meeting its customers requirements."

Prior to the assessment, a quality team under the guidance of Quality Manager Neil Stewart measured compliance with the requirements of the ISO 9001:2000 standard and trained the currently 110 members of staff accordingly.  Siemens Logistics & Assembly Systems, through its subsidiary SD (Middle East) LLC, will continue to be assessed to ensure that the standard is maintained for the future.

Pointing out that the certification is a testament to the organization's commitment to quality and the continuous improvement of processes and services, Neil Stewart said: "The achievement will serve as a doorway for future business success and development, as many clients and purchasers are now selecting suppliers on the basis of them holding third-party certification of their management system."
