Abu Dhabi, UAE - 3 June 2013 - Shell, a global energy leader, showcased its latest advances in gas processing technology to senior representatives and officials from the UAE energy sectors at a high level seminar which took place at Jumeirah Etihad Towers Hotel in Abu Dhabi. Technical experts from Shell briefed senior participants from the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations (ADCO), Abu Dhabi Gas Industries Ltd (GASCO) and Abu Dhabi Gas Liquefaction Company Ltd (ADGAS) on the valuable role of gas processing technology in supporting the UAE meet its energy efficiency objectives whilst increasing gas productivity.
Shell was recently selected by ADNOC to participate in a joint venture (JV) to develop the Bab sour gas reservoirs in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, which will become a major supply of energy for the local market in the years to come.
"We value our long and successful partnership with our oil and gas partners in the UAE. With more than half a century of successful gasification experience globally, we look forward to bringing our leading research and development and technology expertise to support the development of the country's gas sectors along with knowledge transfer programs to enhance the technical expertise of the country's workforce," said Dr. John Barry Shell Abu Dhabi Country Chairman.
The UAE's increased use of natural gas is in line with its energy diversification strategy outlined in Abu Dhabi's Economic Vision 2030. The UAE government is further working towards viable targets for reducing carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases.
"Shell is committed to supporting the UAE meet its energy needs and realising its vision towards energy sustainability and economic diversification with technologies that can further tap into the potential of natural gas. Production of gas has become increasingly more complex as we explore new fields that carry higher levels of hydrogen sulphide and other sulphur compounds. With years of experience working in gas fields containing high levels of contaminants, Shell's gas processing technologies are effectively developed to tackle these challenges," continued Dr. Barry.
Natural gas, which is considered among the greenest and cleanest energy sources, is expected to play a growing role in the country's energy mix. The UAE is estimated to have the fifth largest gas reserve in the world with about 198.5 trillion cubic feet according to the US Energy Information Administration. It is projected that as the world transitions to cleaner fuels natural gas will account for more than 60% of the world's residential and commercial energy demand by 2040.
Shell has extensive experience in gas processing worldwide. Shell has been developing and licensing innovative, proprietary gas and liquids-treating technologies that can help reduce emissions, increase production, improve efficiency of operations and maximise the production of high-value products for over 50 years.
