Dubai - Fairs & Exhibitions Ltd, organisers of the Gulf Pack and Gulf Print exhibitions, today announced that the second Packaging and Graphic Design Awards for Students will take place during the event scheduled from 11-14 December, 2005 at the Airport Expo in Dubai.
Gulf Pack and Gulf Print are regarded as the Middle East's premier industry events, this year tipped to attract over 400 exhibiting companies and over 6,000 trade professionals.
The student awards were especially developed for tertiary students in the UAE and launched at the Gulf Pack Gulf Print show in 2004. "We had over 75 entries from 7 Universities and Colleges in the UAE at last year's show making it a very successful debut," explained Sharla Hancock, Project Manager, Gulf Pack.
"The aim of the awards is to bring students and industry together. We want students to apply their theoretical learnings into practical work, to help them understand the processes required in industry and how their designs can be practically used in the market place," said Hancock.
Invitations have already been sent to local colleges and the response has been very enthusiastic. "In time we hope to include universities from all over the Gulf area and Saudi Arabia," she added.
This year's programme has been refined with some additional categories. For packaging the, students will be invited to submit entries in 3D covering:
Category 1: Packaging for hazardous items such as chemicals, medicine, cleaning detergents...etc.
Category 2: Packaging for luxury items such as jewellery, perfume, limited edition Cds...etc.
Lina Alousta, Project Manager for Gulf Print added that the graphic design categories have introduced themes within the categories, with the aim to offer students the opportunity to create a "piece of art" whilst at the same time reflecting strongly the message of the subject matter.
The four Graphic Design categories include:
1.Poster design to promote an event such as a play or concert
2.Books and/or publications
3.Original typeface design
4.Corporate identity
"The graphic design categories are ones used and seen by the general public on a daily basis such as books, posters, brochures, flyers, logos and so on. We are keen to continue with these categories as they are widely used by industry," said Lina Alousta.
"We have also kept the Original Typeface Design category which specifically focuses on Arabic Type Fonts. Arabic Type Fonts are not as well developed as the Printing industry would like, and this Award Category will allow the students to develop original ideas," explained Lina.
Each of the categories has one sponsor from industry who will present the Award to the winning University. All entries will be exhibited during Gulf Pack and Gulf Print with judging and the awards ceremony taking place on the third day of the event.
The Individual Sponsors will be announced by August. If you are interested in sponsoring any of the awards please contact Momentum below.
