Completely renovates facility for the benefit of more than 300 students at the College of Petroleum and Engineering
Kuwait, December 6, 2011: Global oilfield services provider Schlumberger today announced the completion of the "Schlumberger Computer Lab" at the College of Petroleum and Engineering in Kuwait University, which is now ready to facilitate the company's previously donated USD5.75 million in engineering software.
Over the last two months, Schlumberger rebuilt and upgraded the Kuwait University computer lab to help enable petroleum engineering students acquire hands-on experience with the latest upstream field technologies. The lab was inaugurated with the presence of key personnel from Schlumberger and Kuwait University, including Ashok Belani, Schlumberger Chief Technology Officer; Maen Razouqi, Schlumberger Kuwait General Manager; Dr. Ali Akbar, Chairman of Petroleum Engineering Department at the Kuwait University; and Dr. Adam Al-Mulla, Vice Dean for Planning and Consultation of the College of Engineering and Petroleum at the Kuwait University..
Schlumberger Kuwait General Manager, Maen Razouqi said: "Schlumberger Kuwait has a strong commitment towards advancement of the industry in Kuwait, especially through the education of students and the career-development of engineers. In the last two years, Schlumberger provided Kuwait University's College of Petroleum Engineering students with a full-year access to Schlumberger's state-of-the-art PIPESIM* software, a multiphase flow simulator developed by Schlumberger for the design and diagnostic analysis of oil and gas production systems used in major oil fields throughout the world.
Schlumberger also provided Kuwait University access to the ECLIPSE* technology, a complete software offering. Eclipse has a robust set of numerical solutions for fast and accurate prediction of dynamic behavior that is used for all types of oil and gas reservoirs and of any degrees of complexity in structure, geology, fluids, within development schemes.
The Chairman of the Petroleum Engineering Department at the Kuwait University, Dr. Ali Akbar said: "Our students are in constant need for new technologies related to the oil and gas fields, and Schlumberger has been a leader in providing Kuwait's young minds with the learning and educational tools related to these fields. We thank Schlumberger for its ongoing support and donations towards bettering education in Kuwait."
The Schlumberger team also invests its experience and time conducting training workshops on the software for students and mentoring them on ways to apply them for their university projects.
The Vice Dean for Planning and Consultation of the College of Engineering and Petroleum at the Kuwait University, Dr. Adam Al-Mulla, said: "We thank Schlumberger Kuwait for this contribution, which we are certain will help develop and enhance our students' skills and know-how."
Schlumberger has maintained continuous operations in Kuwait since 1939 and is a supporter of several education programs. Since 2009 and for two years in-a-row, Schlumberger offered international internships to the top two winners of the Kuwait Science Fair, the largest science competition in Kuwait. Schlumberger is committed again this year in the competition's fourth chapter (2011/2012) in providing internship opportunities for the young winning students.
In September 2010, it inaugurated the first online computer lab in Kuwait at The English Academy, connecting the school's students to over 282,000 students from 42 countries, essentially creating a forum of learning, discussion, and knowledge transfer in science fields.
