DeXa.Badge solution with biometric authentication deployed in record time for stronger security

RIO DE JANEIRO - SchlumbergerSema, the information technology (IT) business segment of Schlumberger Limited, today announced it has been awarded a significant contract with Transpetro, the transportation company of Petrobras Group, the Brazilian national energy company. SchlumbergerSema implemented its DeXa.Badge solution to provide secure physical access to Transpetro's offices in Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil, ahead of schedule in only 100 days.

Schlumberger DeXa.Badge is a corporate identity management and access control solution that incorporates smart card and other technologies, and in this case includes biometric, three-factor authentication for even stronger security. Due to its modular, scalable features, the DeXa.Badge solution in place can also be expanded to include secure logical access to network and computing infrastructure as well as other applications.

"As a part of our strategy to upgrade and centralize pipeline operations and create a new Operational Control Center (OCC), Transpetro moved to a new larger facility. The OCC is strategic to our business, controlling and monitoring oil & gas flows in about 70 percent of Brazil's pipeline grid using two independent systems, one for crude oil and byproducts and a second for natural gas. Because of this, we needed even stronger security to control access to the OCC. With the DeXa.Badge solution, we increased security by better controlling the physical entrance and exits by our employees and visitors. Using biometrics, the new DeXa.Badge solution prevents unauthorized access to our OCC by requiring a fingerprint scan to confirm identity," said Jos Marques, Transpetro administration coordinator.

"The DeXa.Badge solution allows multiple applications to be added for expanded future use. Transpetro can easily add the capability to control logical access to PCs, servers and applications, or add public key infrastructure capability for digital signatures and document encryption using the same card," said Marcelo Camargo, SchlumbergerSema Brazil energy manager. "A single integrated authentication solution like DeXa.Badge provides a cost effective way to manage the entire range of authentication services required for enterprise security management."

As part of its DeXa.Badge solution, SchlumbergerSema integrated the cards and reader hardware, the middleware licensing and provided complete service implementation of the new system. The scope of the access control project at Transpetro includes physical blockade equipment, electromagnetic locking devices, biometric authentication, and physical barriers surrounding the compound. With the DeXa.Badge access control system, event control and monitoring of the physical access environment is fully automated with employee frequency integrated seamlessly into the Transpetro ERP System.
