OrientXact delivers dramatic results for Norsk Hydro in North Sea well
HOUSTON - Schlumberger Oilfield Services today announced the introduction of OrientXact* perforating system. This new system improves well productivity and can prevent sand production in horizontal and deviated wells.
Its first field use resulted in the biggest producer in the Visund field in the North Sea. The Norsk Hydro Visund A-4AH well is a 25,000 ft. horizontal well drilled in the Etive sandstone formation. The OrientXact system perforated a 6000 ft. horizontal section in a single trip, resulting in a flow rate of more than 50,000 bpd (barrels per day) with a productivity index of 600 Sm3/D/bar.
"We've been producing from the Visund field since May 1999 and have drilled 13 wells," said Knut Ronning, Visund petroleum technology manager, Norsk Hydro. "The good performance of this well and the successful orientation of the perforations confirmed our high expectations to the new perforating system."
The use of OrientXact can deliver dramatic production results in relatively weak formations, which would typically produce sand when perforated by conventional technology. The OrientXact system uses a specially designed PowerJet Plus* shaped charge, engineered with a zinc-free, low-debris, steel-case that creates deeper perforation tunnels.
"OrientXact is designed to maximize well productivity and help operators realize the greatest benefit from available perforating solutions," said Peter Goode, president, Well Completions and Productivity, Schlumberger Oilfield Services. "It is a particularly effective perforating solution for extended reach, horizontal and highly deviated wells."
Perforating the reservoir rock in the optimum direction creates stable tunnels and with a low tendency to produce sand. In typical sandstone reservoirs, the best perforation orientation for a horizontal well is vertical. Even in tortuous well trajectories, the highly precise OrientXact system produces perforation tunnels within 10 degrees of the optimum direction.
In addition, the OrientXact system has a unique orientation confirmation device that measures the actual perforation tunnel orientation and confirms its accuracy to plus or minus one percent.
