New energy for ECLIPSE Parallel reservoir simulation solution on Intel platforms

HOUSTON - Schlumberger Information Solutions (SIS) announced today at the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Annual Technical Conference in San Antonio the availability of their flagship product ECLIPSE reservoir simulation parallel solution (ECLIPSE Parallel) on high-performance Intel-based platforms including Intel Pentium 4 processors and the Intel Xeon processor family. ECLIPSE Parallel will also soon be available on the Intel Itanium 2 processor. The move to open standards-based Intel microprocessors marks a shift for the oil and gas industry, making it possible to create computationally-intensive simulations in a matter of days rather than weeks and at a lower cost.

"The oil and gas industry continuously seeks ways to optimally produce the reservoir; the ultimate goal is to get downstream faster," said SIS president Ihab Toma. "This requires faster, more precise results from computing performance, and we are increasingly using Intel-based Linux solutions to expand our range of software choices for 3D visualization, modeling and simulations. This allows us to make the ECLIPSE Parallel solution more affordable and accessible to a broader audience-opening up the field for small, mid-size and regional operating companies and enabling organizations to leverage their distributed resources worldwide."

Oil and gas companies depend heavily on computer simulations of their reservoirs to maximize the profitability of their hydrocarbon reserves. The ECLIPSE Parallel solution allows customers to run simulations and to perform post-run viewing and analysis in "real time"-enabling precise, cost-effective interpretations of how to optimize production recovery. The software solution runs on Red Hat Linux 7.2 and splits a single simulation run into many smaller computations that are each processed by individual Intel Xeon processors. Use of Intel technology is on a rapid rise in the energy industry because of its volume economics model, which delivers the high-performance, low-cost, any-software, any-hardware, any-operating system approach.

"Intel is working with global service leaders such as Schlumberger to accelerate the availability of best-in-class I/T solutions to energy customers worldwide," said John Davies, vice president, Solutions Market Development Group, Intel. "Through our joint investment and efforts, including the recently opened Energy Competency Center in Abingdon, UK, we have tuned and optimized ECLIPSE for Intel architecture and are allowing customers to test-drive these applications prior to real-world deployment."

SPE attendees will have the opportunity to see working models of ECLIPSE Parallel on Intel processors, view demonstrations and speak to SIS and Intel technical representatives.
