The fifth expansion project of the Saudi Methanol Company (AR-RAZI) in the Jubail Industrial city went on-stream on May 1, making the SABIC affiliate the world's largest single chemical methanol production complex. AR-RAZI currently produces over 3 million tons of products a year from its existing four plants.

AR-RAZI - 5 is one of the largest methanol projects in the world with a designed annual capacity of 1.7 million metric tons.

The new plant will add about 1,500 metric tons a day to AR-RAZI's capacity, with a capability of increasing production up to 5,000 metric tons a day. SABIC is the world's second largest producer of methanol.

Yousef bin Abdul Rahman Al-Zamel, SABIC Vice President, Basic Chemicals, said, "The demand for methanol is growing rapidly, especially in the new fuel applications such as DME & Biodiesel."

AR-RAZI was founded in 1979 as a 50-50 joint venture between SABIC and the Japanese Saudi Methanol Company, a consortium of major Japanese companies led by Mitsubishi Chemical Gas Company.
