The Project aims at Conserving Marine Habitat & Protecting Nature

Dubai - United Arab Emirates: Marine Agency at Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) is conducting an extensive study to undertake a project of installing floating waste captures in Dubai Creek, in keeping with the plan aiming at introducing modern technology to conserving environment; particularly marine habitat.

Engineer Khalid Al Zahed, Director of Marine Projects Dep't at RTA Marine Agency, said the Agency is conducting this study which envisages collecting all wastes in a single place and disposing of them by means of a net made of stainless light materials. The system will save effort & time and add aesthetic outlook worthy of metropolitan Dubai; which has grown into a preferred destination for tourists, particularly noting that Dubai Creek and surroundings are shaping into a premier maritime tourist attraction.

"Marine Agency is coordinating with one of the leading local companies to manufacture these captures which measure 7x3 meters i.e. the total area of floating waste trap is 21 square meters. Work is in hand to provide one trap shortly to be installed in the vicinity of an abra / water bus station in the Creek. The project will encompass all existing stations of abras / water bus in addition to any stations to be established in future, as part of a time plan developed for this end" said Al Zahed.

He added that manufacturing of the initial trap would require 30 -45 days from the date of commencing manufacturing. Collection of floating waste from captures is being coordinated with the department concerned with cleaning of Dubai Creek at Dubai Municipality.

Al Zahed pointed out that this process is part of RTA Strategic Plan (Strategic Goals - Protecting Environment & Conserving Nature) for the period 2007 -2009. It is noticeable that there is a lot of waste directly dipped in the Creek water by abra commuters or speed boat crews, resulting in an uncivilized view. With recessive mini waves caused by abras, power boats and winds the floating waste is dispersed and thus becomes difficult to collect. Therefore it takes considerable time to collect these floating materials by means of handheld nets and conveyor belts of Dubai Municipality boats.

He added that this trap will be installed near the floating waste spots around the stations so as to collect these materials in a short time, saving both time and effort. Thus it will rid the Creek of these floating materials blocking marine transport and tourism; which are of paramount importance to the efforts of Marine Agency to make Dubai city a marine portal and an ideal destination for sea viewers & tourists, while providing safe & smooth transport.
