Oman Police clamping down on reseller software piracy
The Royal Oman Police recently caught computer shop operators purportedly offering and selling pirated Microsoft software on computers during three separate raids conducted at the Ruwi business district in Muscat, Oman.
The authorities seized PCs and counterfeit CDRs containing pirated versions of popular Microsoft programs
A spokesperson from Oman Police, said: "Selling pirated software as a software reseller, in full view of the buying public, is a blatant disregard of the law. While we would like to encourage all software resellers a chance to reform their ways and become allies of the legitimate software trade. We plan to be uncompromising with regard to repeat offenders and those who continued to disregard the law. Our latest raids are intended to remind those involved in software piracy that Oman will not tolerate any violation of intellectual property rights."
"We thank the Oman Police for their dedication to addressing the piracy threat faced by Oman's software industry. We would once again like to call on the software reseller channel to respect the intellectual property rights, take note of the security and privacy risks associated with counterfeit software used by their own customers and help the industry and Oman reduce the levels of piracy. For our part we continue to offer our full support for private and government initiatives aimed at reducing software piracy in Oman," added Jawad Al Redha, Chair - Business Software Alliance, Gulf Region.
