ABU DHABI, UAE – Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC), the entity responsible for developing the quality infrastructure in the Emirate, has implemented a number of tests to ascertain the accuracy of medical measuring instruments in the market and in health facilities, under the banner of its ‘Medical Measuring Instruments Project’.
Verification tests carried out by the Council since the beginning of 2018 have confirmed the accuracy of medical thermometers at 93%, arterial blood pressure measuring devices at 95%, and syringes at 98%. The verification process included medical devices which were sold for both domestic use and in medical facilities.
Sultan Al Mehairi, Director of Information Services and Engagement at QCC, said that the verification tests were carried out within the framework of an agreement signed between the Council and the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (ESMA) to ensure continuous verification of medical measuring instruments throughout the Emirate.
The process guarantees the accuracy of the instruments and therefore the safety of individuals. This ensures the levels of services in Abu Dhabi are in accordance with the highest global standards.
“The QCC is very keen on carrying out periodic verification and control processes in order to check the accuracy of measuring instruments’ readings which can have a significant impact on medical diagnosis results, and the quality of medical measuring instruments used in medical facilities and traded in the marketplace.
Operations like this contribute to helping the Council develop infrastructural standards in Abu Dhabi. Integrated and highly efficient, these standards enhance the culture of quality and product safety, based on global best practices and in-line with Abu Dhabi's plan to build a strong and competitive economy” said Sultan Al Mehairi.
As part of efforts to expand its services in this field, the QCC, in collaboration with Imperial College London Diabetes Center and National Reference Laboratory (NRL) - both part of Mubadala’s network of world-class healthcare providers - also conducted a case study on glucose meters that are available for personal use to verify their accuracy. This case study complemented the existing procedures in place to maintain quality control over medical and laboratory measuring devices available throughout Abu Dhabi.
“NRL praises the efforts of the QCC to ensure high-quality standards for medical measuring instruments available in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi for both professional and personal use. As an organization committed to providing gold standard laboratory services, we were glad to verify the accuracy of glucose meters as part of the ‘Medical Measuring Instruments Project.’ Through this project we hope to support patients to get reliable results whether testing at home or in a healthcare facility,” said Dr. Basel Altrabulsi, Chief Medical Officer of National Reference Laboratory.
The QCC was established in 2009 to empower regulators in Abu Dhabi, raise the quality of exports and locally traded products, to promote quality, industrial development, competitiveness and a consumer safety culture, by enabling regulators to develop and implement product safety, legal standards and conformity programs. Also, the Board sets guidelines and standards to verify that manufactured and traded products in Abu Dhabi are consistent with the highest standards of safety, quality and conformity.
