Qatar Cool's Second Plant In The West Bay Area Is Now Operational And Will Service, With The First Plant, A Total Of 46 High Rise Modern Towers With Its Energy Efficient And Environmentally Friendlier Cooling System.

Qatar District Cooling Company, the sole distributors of district cooling services in Qatar, announced another great milestone for the company and for Qatar with the operational launch of its second plant in Doha's thriving financial district - West Bay.

The launch of a new plant in this commercial, financial and residential hub of Qatar will mean that a further 1,000,000 square metres in this area will receive all their cooling needs from a central plant housing reliable and efficient industrial chillers that are monitored 24 hours a day by qualified operation teams.

The plant is the third operational plant in Qatar for Qatar Cool, having launched its first Plant in West Bay in 2006 and at The Pearl-Qatar earlier this year. The Pearl-Qatar Plant is the world's largest single integrated district cooling plant and will have a network capacity of 130,000+ refrigerating tonnes (TR) of cooling when the plant becomes fully operational next year.

Plant 2 in West Bay has a capacity of 37,000 TR and is connected through the network to Plant 1, which has a capacity of 30,000 TR. The combined plants will serve a total of 46 towers in the area by 2011; this will include a mixture of Residential Towers, Office Towers, mixed use towers and a raft of new hotels that are currently still at construction stage.

Fayad Al Khatib, General Manager at Qatar Cool, said: "At Qatar Cool we are progressing quickly in implementing a comprehensive district cooling system that compliments the rapid growth of Qatar. Our district cooling system will allow for a greener, more economical way of cooling in the home, at work and in people's leisure spaces. In the five years since Qatar Cool's inception we have made rapid developments and achieved some remarkable milestones, these include the first integrated district cooling system in Qatar and the world's largest single plant at The Pearl-Qatar. Our continued expansion and green approach to cooling has brought with it the very latest pioneering technology, placing us firmly at the forefront of a rapidly growing industry.

"We are proud of these accomplishments and continue to look to the future. The launch of a second plant in West Bay allows us to service a greater number of clients who can enjoy the many benefits of a district cooling system."

The addition of a second district cooling plant in West Bay will allow for several environmental, economical and energy efficient advantages to the area and Qatar. District Cooling works particularly well in areas of high density such as West Bay - the collection of several high tower buildings in close proximity allows for the central plant to service many buildings in the vicinity.

District cooling systems mean less energy is used per customer; that in turn allows for less CO2 production, a major source of Global Warming. A conventional cooling system requires 1.7 MW of power per 1,000 TR, whereas a district cooling system uses just 1MW per 1,000 TR.

The infrastructure of a district cooling plant displaces peak power demand and reduces the requirements for the generation of new power; the system utilises its resources to ensure minimal impact on the environment.

Landlord, Mr. Shihab AlAlawai, said: "We are pleased to be using Qatar Cool's district cooling system for our new building. We are always mindful of the impact any new building will have on the environment and also wish to offer our clients the latest, most economic and environmentally friendly service. Using Qatar Cool means we no longer need bulky, wasteful equipment on site. We also have complete peace of mind that through continuous monitoring by Qatar Cool's team we can be energy efficient and all maintenance is handled quickly with minimal disruption to our many clients."

Additional benefits of district cooling that will be brought to West Bay with the implementation of a second plant include: less noise and vibration, more open space and greenery, improved comfort conditions and a healthier atmosphere as building managers will no longer have large air conditioning units as part of the building, nor will they need to use refrigeration chemicals on site.

About Qatar Cool
Qatar District Cooling Company, known as Qatar Cool, is the only company to provide district cooling in Qatar. Qatar cool is a private sector joint venture company owned 51% by United Development Company (UDC), 44% by the Dubai-based National District Cooling Company (Tabreed) and 5% by other private Qatari investors.

Qatar Cool's aim is to provide efficient district cooling solutions and services for commercial and residential projects in Qatar.

Their district cooling operations in the West Bay area of Doha - consisting of two plants covering 10 square kilometres - is currently supplying over 67,000 refrigerating tons of cooling, serving more than 45 towers used for residential, commercial and governmental purposes.

The capacity of both plants is about two million square meters of air conditioned area.

Qatar Cool is also commissioned to provide district cooling for the Pearl Qatar. District Cooling is an important feature in the Pearl's advanced infrastructure. It will be available through the island with a requirement of 115,000 tons of refrigeration when fully occupied. To supply this demand, construction of Qatar Cool district cooling on the island has already begun and will be operational in phases.

About District Cooling:
District Cooling provides chilled water from a cooling plant through a network of pipes to multiple residential, industrial and commercial buildings for air conditioning purposes. Qatar witnessed the first commercial district cooling plant in 2005, which is owned and operated by Qatar Cool.

Qatar Cool's district cooling can save from 40% to 60% of the required power over conventional systems. The other benefit of district cooling for Qatar is that less usage of power means less harmful emissions, less noise, and less refrigerant leakage.

The economic benefits of district cooling are enjoyed by both owner and tenant, where capital costs of control panels, internal power distribution, annual maintenance and power consumption inside the building are reduced.
