Tawam organizes range of activities to raise awareness amongst staff about JCI accreditation requirements

Al Ain, January 24th 2009: In preparation for Joint Commission international re-accreditation and to foster safe practice among the healthcare providers, Tawam Hospital in affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine will host a series of JCIA Education fairs. The activities will run in January, March and April and are being planned by the Department of Performance Innovation (DPI).

The objectives of the fair include; encouraging 'best practice' in medication safety, infection control, incidents and sentinel events reporting, quality improvement, patient and family education and a glimpse of the importance of data and measurements. Other objectives include; reducing medication errors, promoting patient and family rights, increasing the awareness of the patient safety international goals and finally introducing new approaches in Healthcare Quality Management.

"We have selected the theme 'Knowledge and fun for everyone' as we want our employees to enjoy the process.  The idea of the Fair is a new concept, not only for Tawam Hospital but also for the Healthcare field in the UAE. It brought together innovative ideas and turned them into everyday challenges and experiences that our employees can relate to," said Ahlam Al Sheiban, the department of performance Innovations   Manager.

One of the unique ideas that Tawam has launched to create awareness about the JCI rules and regulations is the concept of a simulation room. Employees at Tawam will have the opportunity to learn about all the different things that could potentially go wrong in a patient's room

The simulation room will be a mock up of a patient's hospital room at Tawam. The room will be deliberately altered and there will be significant things that are wrong with the room that could be potentially harmful to the patient.. In addition, employees will be able to learn about the JCI accreditation process by reviewing case studies and self assessment.

The Joint Commission international accreditation  JCIA, which is effective for three years, evaluated Tawam in 2006 and found it meeting health care quality standards for patient care and organization management. Tawam was the first government hospital accredited by JCI in May 2006. They will be re evaluated this coming spring.
