Hitachi Data Systems and Data Islandia offer environmentally friendly Data Archiving

Storage vendor Hitachi Data Systems has joined forces with Icelandic archive services provider, Data Islandia, to offer what the pair claim is the world's most environmentally friendly outsourced data archiving service. Data Islandia's facilities in Iceland are entirely powered by geothermal and hydroelectric energy. Its selection of Hitachi's Content Archive Platform digital indexing and archival platform and Universal Storage Platform V storage system will enable the managed services vendor to offer high-speed, low-latency online access to disk-based archives.

"...While there are many tiered-storage solutions offering archiving to disk, of which Hitachi's solution is an example, these can be expensive and also add to the space, power and cooling burden within data centres. Hence the growing attraction of removing archived data from the corporate network and out-tasking its management to a third party, such as Data Islandia."

"The second trend - that of building data centres and facilities away from urban centres and closer to energy sources - is one that we expect to become more prevalent in the years to come. We expect to see many more IT services vendors locating their data centres and facilities, not just off-shore, but close to power utilities, especially where those power utilities use renewable energy resources."

Full commentary below:

"Apart from the opportunity for Hitachi Data Systems to get in with a bit of 'green' messaging, this announcement highlights a couple of significant trends in the managed services sector: increased demand for data archiving services and moves to locate data centres and facilities close to locations where there are cheaper, sustainable sources of power."

"The demand for data archiving and managed storage services is growing with the increase in regulatory requirements in a number of vertical markets and the need to retain data for compliance purposes. The requirement for more data to be archived will have an impact on many organizations' power, space and management resources if it's kept in house. Traditional tape-based archiving makes for slow, inflexible retrieval of data. While there are many tiered-storage solutions offering archiving to disk, of which Hitachi's solution is an example, these can be expensive and also add to the space, power and cooling burden within data centres. Hence the growing attraction of removing archived data from the corporate network and out-tasking its management to a third party, such as Data Islandia."

"The second trend - that of building data centres and facilities away from urban centres and closer to energy sources - is one that we expect to become more prevalent in the years to come. Google is already building data centres close to power stations on the banks of the Columbia River. On a smaller scale, IT services companies such as Data Islandia see the value of locating their facilities close to sources of renewable energy and it goes beyond just wanting to be green. The principle is a good one: it's easier and more efficient to transmit data over long distances, than it is to transfer electricity. We expect to see many more IT services vendors locating their data centres and facilities, not just off-shore, but close to power utilities, especially where those power utilities use renewable energy resources."
