The Nokia 6100 phone packs high-quality colour display, MMS and JavaTM technology into the smallest Nokia phone yet

Nokia today announced the Middle East launch of the Nokia 6100 phone, the latest addition to the classic phone category. Designed for mobile professionals, the Nokia 6100 phone has a slim, streamlined shape with a wide complement of features, including a high-quality colour display, Java technology and support for multimedia messaging (MMS). It is a tri-band mobile phone functioning around the globe wherever GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 networks are available. The Nokia 6100 phone is expected to start shipping in the Middle East before the end of 2002.

“The 6100 is an excellent example of how advances in technology have made it possible to shrink the form factor of mobile phones without reducing functionality,” said Eddie Maalouf, marketing manager, Nokia Middle East. “Middle East phone owners are extremely particular in the type of mobile that they will purchase. We expect that the 6100, with its classic look and tri-band  functionality will prove successful across the region.”

The ergonomic keypad for easy text input and the large high-quality colour display enables the Nokia 6100 to be an optimal balance between size and usability. Via its Pop-PortTM interface, the Nokia 6100 phone supports the Nokia Camera Headset, also launched today, which enables users to take digital images to send as MMS messages. This means that the Nokia 6100 phone can send, receive and forward multimedia messages with text and image content to other compatible MMS-enabled phones.*

“Even though the Nokia 6100 is the smallest Nokia phone we have launched so far, it offers uncompromising performance and usability. The impressive range of features ensures that we can offer mobile professionals a well designed tool to manage both work and private life,“ said Kai Öistämö, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones.

The Nokia 6100 phone supports Java 2 Micro Edition (J2MEÔ), based on the Mobile Information Device Profile 1.0 (MIDP 1.0), which enables application developers to create innovative and exciting applications for mobile devices. Pre-installed Java applications on the Nokia 6100 include a Converter (for currencies, temperature, weight and other measures), a WorldClock and Java games. Users can remove the pre-installed applications and replace them with other applications of their choice.

The Nokia 6100 phone also incorporates a mobile wallet application, which allows users to make convenient and reliable online transactions via WAP. The security module, Wireless Identity Module (WIM), enables users to digitally sign their transactions, and includes Wireless Public Key Infrastructure (WPKI) support.

Polyphonic ringtones and an integrated handsfree speaker provide an improved sound experience for users of the Nokia 6100 phone.  With the Nokia 6100 phone, users will be able to download Java applications, polyphonic ring tones and pictures via WAP from Club Nokia. In addition, users will be able to store pictures in a personal picture zone in Club Nokia’s Photo Zone and send pictures as multimedia messages from the web site.

The Nokia 6100 phone has a volume of 60 cc, weighs 76 grams and has a talk time of up to 6 hours and a standby time of up to 320 hours.
