Doha, 11 December 2010 - Today the State of Qatar renamed the highway to Ras Laffan Industrial City "Route 77" to commemorate its historic achievement of 77 million tonnes per annum (Mta) production capacity of liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is delivered to all four corners of the world.

Qatar, the world's largest producer of LNG, officially unveiled a new sign announcing that the 13km road leading to Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLIC) has been renamed in recognition of reaching 77 Mta LNG production capacity.

This achievement fulfils the vision of His Highness the Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani to realise 77 Mta production capacity of LNG by the end of 2010.

Since the first drop of LNG was produced 14 years ago, Qatar has grown its capacity steadily under the guidance and direction of the Deputy Premier and Minister for Energy and Industry of the State of Qatar, and Chairman of Qatar Petroleum, His Excellency Abdulla Bin Hamad Al Attiyah.

Renaming the road "Route 77' also recognises Ras Laffan's position as the world's largest LNG facility. RLIC is home to Qatar's 14 LNG trains, including six mega trains operated by the two companies Qatargas and RasGas Company Limited, which together provide the full 77 Mta production capacity. Qatari LNG is now delivered to over 23 markets across four continents.

Abdulaziz Al Malki, Director, Office of the Deputy Premier and Chair of the 77Mta Higher Committee, said:
"Route 77 is the final stretch of road that leads us to Ras Laffan Industrial City, the world's biggest LNG export terminal and the hub from where all of Qatar's LNG is exported to countries on four continents around the world. Route 77 will remind people of this significant achievement which brings to realisation the vision of His Highness The Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani."

Abdulaziz Jassim Mohd Al-Muftah, Director Ras Laffan adds that:
"I wish at the outset to extend my gratitude to Qatar Petroleum and its world-class LNG industries for achieving this record production. 'Route 77' formerly known as 'Ras Laffan Main Avenue' will honour the workforce whose efforts have been pivotal to the success of the city and the nation."
