Sharjah -- Recognizing the importance of proficiency in computer skills, American University of Sharjah (AUS) and the International Computer Driving License (ICDL) GCC Foundation, the governing body and certification authority of the ICDL program in the Gulf States and Iraq, has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at AUS.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Peter Heath, Chancellor of AUS, and Jamil Ezzo, Director General of the ICDL GCC Foundation. Present at the signing ceremony were also senior officials from AUS and ICDL GCC Foundation.
"I am grateful that ICDL will be facilitating our objective of offering computer courses for the benefit of all our staff," said Dr. Heath. "Having a thorough understanding of computers is one of the fundamental skills needed by professionals today and I look forward to our continued collaboration."
"Recognizing the reputation of AUS, we welcome the new partnership as it will draw greater attention and support from leading academic institutions towards our efforts to enhance the digital competency of all members of the society." said Jamil Ezzo. "We are here to demonstrate our commitment to supporting AUS on a continuous basis and to help expand the reach of the newly accredited center, from staff and educators to the student population and ultimately the general public."
The MOU sees cooperation between AUS and the ICDL GCC Foundation in offering AUS staff ICDL courses, which will enable them to learn and polish their skills in computer usage in seven modules; 1) Concepts of Information Technology, 2) Using the Computer and Managing Files, 3) Word Processing, 4) Spreadsheets, 5) Database, 6) Presentation, 7) Information and Communication (Internet and e-mail).
ICDL is an integrated digital literacy program recognized worldwide. The program empowers individuals with the essential skills and knowledge of computer and practical use of common desktop applications. ICDL is based on a recognized global standard, acknowledged through testing, and proves that the certificate holder has fundamental skills in IT. Available in more than 40 languages, the program is endorsed by education ministries, universities and government organizations and is accredited by more than 148 countries.
