Seminar part of the electoral education program on election process, regulations
Dubai, September 26, 2006: The National Election Committee (NEC) has stepped up its efforts to promote awareness of election procedures and regulations with a series of seminars for members of the seven emirates' election sub-committees. The first such seminar was held yesterday (Monday, September 25) evening at the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Chaired by Dr. Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for FNC Affairs and Head of the NEC, the seminar was attended by Tariq Hilal Lootah, Secretary-General of FNC Affairs Ministry, Dr Saeed Al Ghafli, Assistant Secretary-General of the FNC Affairs Ministry, and more than 30 representatives from the seven sub-committees.
Each emirate sub-committee is comprised of five members, led by a representative of the Ruler's Court or Diwan, and including representatives from the police and municipality as well as two public figures. The sub-committees are responsible for providing permanent offices in their emirate, and securing the human resources and technical capacity required.
Each sub-committee will also be the communications channel between the NEC and members of the Electoral College. They will also possess the final Electoral College list, including the addresses and other details of Electoral College members, notify members of any new information regarding the elections, and manage all the logistical aspects of the elections.
In his address to the sub-committee members, Dr. Gargash outlined the importance of an accurate and capable communications channel.
"Establishing strong communications with each emirate is a crucial step in the NEC's awareness drive," he said. "The sub-committees will be our first point of contact and will have direct interaction with Electoral College members. We want to ensure consistency of information and messages, and this seminar is a step towards that."
Dr. Gargash also clarified details and regulations of the election process, including the details of the selection process for the Electoral College. He reiterated that the upcoming elections are a positive step towards greater modernization of the FNC and will encourage participation of UAE nationals in charting the future of their nation.
Established by presidential decree in December 2005, the National Elections Committee is assigned to supervise the upcoming elections scheduled to take place before the end of 2006. It will set poll dates in each of the UAE's seven emirates, supervise the vote and announce results.
